What We Do:
The Literacy Program serves adult learners who want to speak, read and write English. Our volunteers range from 20-somethings to retired professionals who want the satisfaction of teaching a motivated learner. Last year, 127 tutors changed the lives of more than 200 students. New tutors are always wanted and needed.

Be inspired by our 11-minute video by clicking on "Chaminade employees" above. "Awesome video. It captures something that makes me want to be involved with this forever," says tutor Rose Vodrey.

The next new tutor training will be in March, 2007. If you "can't wait" that long to begin tutoring, we may be able to get you started in some capacity before then. Call the office at 427-5077, please.

At the end of our twice-yearly training, staff introduces you to the student you select from a list and gives you a confident start. Monthly Tutor Salons provide even more support, fun and teaching tips.We teach our students to make emergency phone calls, how to talk to their children's teachers and to medical personnel. We teach "Survival English" a little at a time, all year long.

This knowledge is empowering. Newman's Own Organics bankrolled the launch of Survival English #4, Nutrition this November, 2006. The charitable organic foods company supports adult students' health through improved diet -- perfect symmetry.

Statistically, our students out-perform California Adult Ed students. Whereas the average reading gain at beginning and intermediate levels is 35% in Adult Schools, the Literacy Program produces an impressive 69%. The only explanation is the dedication and competence of our volunteer tutors.

75% of our tutoring is one-on-one ("Each One Teach One"). We also have lively, successful small classes from Ben Lomond to Watsonville, average tutor-student ratio 1:3.

Tutors & Friends raised $50,000 in 05-06 and have geared up to raise the same amount this year. Last year 95 staunch supporters donated $12,387.00 in response to our direct mail campaign.
K.V.sent a letter with her $1000 check. "I really believe in what you are doing and I want to invest in that." Tutor Allison Gray donated a car which we sold to a friend for $4600. A gift of $1000 from The Brian and Patricia A. Herman Fund renewed our courage and commitment. A gift of $1000 came from Kate & Mike Rodenbaugh in December, and another $1000 from a tutor in January.
Literacy is the theme of Rotary International this year: Freedom Rotary said Happy New Year with a $1000 investment, followed by Capitola-Aptos Rotary's $1000 gift in June.

$5000 from Driscoll's Berries and $3000 from Pajaro Valley Community Health Trust strengthen our south county efforts.

In addition to income from CDE, the County, United Way, we had big pat on the back of $8000 from an anonymous tutor. Big-hearted friends give us the courage and the means to recoup budget cuts and operate at a level worthy of our students.
