Introduction
The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is named for the French historian and author who came to America in 1831 and praised the Americans for voluntarily assisting their neighbors in times of need. The desire to recognize individuals who exemplify this spirit of volunteerism for the common good prompted the United Way of America to create the national Alexis de Tocqueville Society in 1972 and name it after the young French aristocrat.
As a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, you demonstrate much more than the ability to give. You demonstrate your extraordinary commitment and willingness to dedicate personal resources to lead the way to real and lasting change. Your gift at this level is an investment in the future of Santa Cruz County.
Membership Benefits
As a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, you will be listed in both the national and local Alexis de Tocqueville Society directory along with other extraordinary individuals throughout Santa Cruz County and the United States. You will also be invited to our annual celebration dinner and other special events to honor and acknowledge your dedication and leadership.
Giving Choices
As an Alexis de Tocqueville member, you are encouraged to build Santa Cruz's safety net of health and human services while furthering United Way's mission to improve the quality of life in our county. As a general guideline, we ask that a minimum of 50 percent of your total gift be given as an unrestricted contribution to the United Way of Santa Cruz County. You may also designate your contributions to a specific United Way agency or other qualified 501(c)(3) organizations including health and human services, arts and education. United Way will forward your gift within 48 hours, unless otherwise instructed, and will provide both you and the designated organizations with the proper acknowledgements.
