Women in Philanthropy
|
Women in Philanthropy is an initiative sponsored by the United Way of Santa Cruz County. It was launched in 2006 by a group of local women dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people in our community. They do this through a wise investment of their time and financial resources. The group is composed of businesswomen, community leaders and volunteers.
The group is membership-based and determines where they want to invest their funds. The group currently receives a generous corporate grant from Bank of America to help fund the programs. |
Women in Philanthropy has chosen to invest their raised funds in services which help children succeed in school and prepare them for a self sufficient adulthood. Currently the group is supporting four school-based programs:
- Reading Recovery
- English Learning for Success
- SPECTRA (arts based program)
- MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement)

Women in Philanthropy also sponsors the POWER Project - supplying educational resources to under-served schools based on Wish Lists created by the teachers. |
| In addition to funding programs and running active projects, Women in Philanthropy also has a goal of being a strong advocate for children's education. The current budget crises and its impact on the quality of education has led the membership to endorse the work of California Forward which is working to address the root causes of the state governance problems.
